Lisztomania - The Best of 2018, part V.

While struggling to write short descriptions of the best albums in the year 2018 (allegedly, that's what I've been doing lately), I realised how breathtakingly useless this whole thing is as there are people out there still listening to christmas music (that torment started with August, while christmas movies have been on tv since July). Most of them are forced into it (retail workers), but some are delighted to do so (I hope there is a special circle in hell just for them).

This could be the last part, but obviously it isn't (I'm apparently way too dense to just stop). Too much amazing music for someone with a severe case of lisztomania. Or just another case of a year being way too long.

10.9. Goat Sperm – Voice in the Womb (black / death, Ukraine)

Very little bands with 'Goat' in their name tend to disappoint if you haven't noticed.

14.9. Witch King – Voice of the Ossuary (black / death metal, USA)

17.9.Eternal Rot – Cadaverine (death / doom, Poland / United Kingdom)

One of those releases, you think will be interesting because of the cover picture and in no time you're running around wondering when has the portal to hell opened up and swallowed you.

21.9. Cosmic Void Ritual – Grotesque Infections of Planetary Divide (death metal turned inside out, USA)

28.9. Dakhma – Hamkar Atonement (black / death, Switzerland)

18.10. Bog Body – Through the Burial Bog (black / death / doom, USA)

As I first heard this album in the begining of December, it got a consecutive number 69 (it was the 69th album in the year 2018 that got on the 'The Best of' list) and it talks about cadavers. Is there anything else a girl could wish for? Probably a cold beer, but let's not complicate things, okay?

19.10. Voidhaven – s/t (EP) (death doom, Germany)

'Mmmm, this is nice, feels like floating... What the hell? Eeeww, this one has clean vocals! I hate clean vocals!... Wait, these are good... they remind me of the best clean vocals from last year... Very similar, maybe too much, really... Oh, for fuck sake, woman, it's the same voice!'
*to solve this mystery: if you'll like the combination of amazing music and even better clean vocals in this album, go pay attention to Fvneral Fvkk and you'll see how confused my head was at that point.

26.10. Krukh - БЕЗГЛУЗДІСТЬ! (BM, USA)

26.10. Hissing – Permanent Destitution (black / death metal, USA)

1.11. Necroholocaust – Laudem Antichristus (black / death metal, Canada)

16.11. VoidSphere – To Await I To Expect (Prava Kollektiv, X)

16.11. HWWAUOCH Hwwauoch (Prava Kollektiv, X)

Another two releases from the amazing, yet mysterious Prava Kollektiv (I tried to talk about them previously). This is a sophmore release for VoidSphere. Last year they released a debut and until this year they evolved into their sophmore release. Both releases work so well together, they could be mistaken for a two part album, while both work perfectly fine on their own. Put your headphones on, turn off the light and enjoy.
On the other side, Hwwauoch are just introducing theirself to the world. Again, I know nothing about this band, except the fact that they sound like tormented souls trapped in hell. Dark, scary, dissonant, disturbing... Love at first hearing.

24.11. Death Karma – The History of Death and Burial Rituals pt. II (sex for ears, Czech Republic)

I don't think I should describe the music one of my favorite bands made. Obviously I won't be objective enough. I'll just tell you the songs are based (like the title says) on interesting rituals asociated with death and burial in diferent cultures around the world. If that's not enough for you to make you listen to them, you're obviously in the wrong place.

It said 'sex for ears' which obviously means I should go do something else. Got any Ideas what I left out? Let me know until the next time... because we're not done yet.

Lisztomania - The Best of 2018, part IV.

Allegedly, some of you celebrated something today. But in my honest opinion doing something you do every day (cleaning, cooking and listening to people bitch about politics) is not something that should be done during the holidays, because those days are supposed to be different. Because of that I reckon today is a completely average day. I haven't done anything out of the ordinary today (even though I wanted to... and because I rarely get what I want, this is not the season to be jolly). Therefore, the new post of the best of music in 2018 is here, if you like it or not.

This post describes the summer season. In my opinion, the summer months are the time for live concerts, tours and festival appearances and less for relasing new stuff. That's why the summer is condensed into one part. Still, the summer releases are usually very strong. Listen to these if you haven't yet.

1.6. GraveCoven – Coughing Blood (black / death metal, USA)

It took awhile to get this thing properly released. Was it worth the wait? Let me tell you like this: the worst thing on this record is the cover of Bathorys 'Hades'. And that one was never meant to be a bad song. So yes, it was definitely worth the wait.

6.6. Jyotisavedanga – Thermogravimetry Warp Continuum (radiation of a massive black hole in the middle of an old, decaying galaxy somewhere in space, India / Ukraine / Russia)

The quasi-genre description says it all. The sound of a massive black hole radiation in the middle of an old decaying galaxy somewhere in space is probably the best way to describe this album. Massive, inevitable darkness. Exactly how music should sound these days. Absolute perfection. And by the way, this is their debut album.

6.6. Caveman Cult – Supremacia Primordial EP (black / death metal, USA)

I don't think I've ever heard a band that fits its name as good as this one does. Modern education teaches us the cavemen were not in particularly intelligent, but still they were capable of hunting down a woolly mammoth for food. Most men these days are afraid of spiders, so you can't expect them to hunt down something for food (just to remind you, poachers are scum, they don't hunt for food, they hunt for money). Most of modern men don't even know where sandwiches live. You see the problem?
That's why this band deserves to have the word cult in their name. But it's still funny to imagine the original cavemen playing something similar to this EP and animals just falling down dead. And no, no animals have been hurt while I had this sick idea in my head.

6.6. Crurifragium – Black seed of Bestiality (black / death, USA)

15.6. Chthe'illist – Passage into the Xexanotth (black / death metal, Canada)

15.6. Goat Disciple – Wolfcult Domination EP (war metal, USA)

15.6. Blasphamagoatachrist – Black Metal Warfare (The band name is a combination of the names of other bands members also play in... if you haven't noticed)

The name gives a hint about what's about to happen here. Blasphemy? Check! Goatpenis? Check! Antichrist? Check! It doesn't need a long introduction. If you know the these bands, you'll know what to expect. And that's what you'll get. Multiplied by at least three.
If, by any chances you don't know these bands, you've been living under a rock. Or perhaps in a church. And I really can't help you with that.

26.6. Slidhr – The Futile Fires of Man (black / death metal, Iceland / Ireland)

21.7. Aparthiva Raktadhara – Agyat ishvar (black / Death, India)

More and more amazing bands are peeking out of the Indian underground to come marching over countries who have reigned in extreme metal until now.
Many years ago, during my college days I had an interesting conversation with a friend who later became a catholic priest. He actually wanted to know what kind of music I listened to (not the one people thought I listened to... that's a very long story and I'm not going to explain it here) and after a couple of beers we came to conclusion that the most brutal bands come from countries where religious beliefs are forced onto people (it doesn't matter what country or what religion we mentioned, we always came to the same conclusion). Today this band is a perfect example of that. They respect what they have been taught, but they also see the dark side of it. Something believers of any religion are not capable of doing when it comes to their own beliefs.

27.7. Bloodsoaked Necrovoid – Demo I (angry cave being angry, Costa Rica)

8.8. Genocide Shrines – Ceylonese Terror Attack (live album) (black / death metal, Sri Lanka)

Witnessing only a couple of minutes of this live attack by this legendary band is enough to convince someone as broke as me to buy the whole album.

5.9. SEKH – Acephale (experimental death doom, Spain)

I actually went on vacation in the second half of August and returned just in time to witness the premiere of this gem. But wait, there's only one song on it. Is it a single? It could also be an EP as the song is 17+ minutes long. Is there another song to this 'album'? Get your shit together woman, you're barely capable to stay sane during this one.

7.9. Malthusian – Across deaths (black / death, Ireland)

Another one of those eagerly awaited releases. Also, finally a debut album from this band. They introduced this output in an interesting way, saying 'It’s not that the Irish are cynical. It’s rather that they have a wonderful lack of respect for everything and everybody.' (B. Behan). The rest is up to you.

7.9. Morne – To the Night Unknown (sludge / post metal, USA)

While I loved Morne since the first time I heard them, I have been very sceptical about this album. For some reason I was convinced they will never be able to write an album in the lines of their previous effort Asylum. That album contains my personal favorite song by them and I was hoping the band will continue writing stuff similar to it. When I hope for something like this to happen, it never does. So when it was finally released, I was surprised it sounded much better than what I expect them to sound while not sounding like I hoped them to sound. (there'a a huge difference between something you hope for and something you expect, get those straight and then we'll talk).

Had enough? Apparently not, there's more to come... soon. You should be afraid.
Until the next time tell me what I've missed or tell me what you think I could listen to, I'm always happy to get suggestions.

Lisztomania - The Best of 2018, part III.

Back with the third part of the years best of music. I'm running out of words and ideas how to describe things. To be honest, I rarely know how to do that. When it comes to music, if I say something is sexy, that means the song / album / whatever is above the whole describing-with-words thing. And yes, that's why I'd describe most of the things on my list this way.

But, funny enough that's not the main reason why I don't describe each link separately. If I like something, I like and most of the time I don't even know why. I just do. I don't describe links because you should be the one listening to them and not me. I already did that. That's why I made the list. It's not nuclear physics to be honest.

To start the todays post, I'm going to begin with a bang.

1.4. Abyssal & Carcinoma – Apanthropinization (split EP) (doesn't matter, I'm screaming, you can't stop me, Velika Britanija)
To explain the screaming part where the genre should be: I hate when people stare at me or talk to me. I hate talking and I don't even want people to pay attention to me. That's why I only scream if I have an incredibly good reason for it. One of my favorite bands ever making a split with the band that lended them musicians for their first live performance ever (that happened in Iceland this year)? Damn right I'm going to scream my lungs out. Sounds confusing? Just listen to this absolute gem.

2.4. Kroda – Selbstwelt (BM, Ukraine)

10.4. Alkymist – Spellcraft Ceremony (BM, Canada)

20.4. Dark Buddha rising – II (experimental, Finland)

20.4. Summon – Parazv II Zilittv (black / death metal, Portugal)
Anoter one of those 'drilling through your skull' albums. Like that's a bad thing...

20.4. Vomitor – Pestilent Death (death thrash, Australia)

20.4. Dagger Lust – Siege Bondage Adverse to the Godhead (black / death metal, USA)
And, we're here. If I wanted to make the best of the year as a countdown to the absolute album of the year, the whole thing would end here. This is it right here, the absolute top of 2018. I have no clue how to describe it (well, I do, but it would be considered unappropriate).

26.4. Kzohh – 26 (ambiental BM, Ukraine)
Two epic tracks dedicated to the Chernobyl disaster and to the deaths of nine Mansi hunters in 1959. I don't think you should ask for a longer explanation.

27.4. Midas Fall – Evaporate (dream rock, United Kingdom)
The list today seems to be getting more and more serious (some of you might even say brutal) with each release, but I don't want you to lose your focus, therefore I included this into the list. Probably one of the dreamiest releases this year. It was obvious I was going to put this on the list. Just because.

4.5. Adversvm – Aion Sitra Ahra (BM, Germany)
If I consider something to be really good, I usually have no clue about how to describe it. Want me to shut up? Play me something that will make me shut up.

4.5. Death. Void. Terror. – To the Great Monolith (death / black, International)
Read the Adversum description. It really is that simple.

11.5. Deiphago – Demo 2018 (Bestial BM, Costa Rica)

29.5. The Black Sorcery - ...And the Beast Spake Death from Above (BM, Canada)
Not too long ago, it has been said they are bringing a new album in 2019. Wanna bet that one will be on the list of the best of 2019?

31.5. Pneuma Hagion – Trinity (kompilacija demo posnetkov) (black / death metal, USA)

You know you're gonna love something when you hear the first couple of notes of that being played. Since 2015 I have included something from the Pneuma Hagion mastermind in every end of the year list. The demos in this collection have been published throughout 2015 separately, but this year they saw the light of the day together as a compilation.

Do not despare, I'll be back soon. Until then, let me know  about what i've missed, what I could listen to, what your suggestions are or fight me about how wrong my opinions are. Or just come around to talk to me. Since I'm not very talkative in real life, there's a huge chance I won't respond.

Lisztomania - The Best of 2018, part II.

Hey, look! Someone decided to talk again. About usual nonsense she usually talks about to herself, but this time she's going public. And making an idiot out of herself again. She's quite prone to do so, so she doesn't really care anymore.

As I have already stated yesterday, 2018 was a really good year for awesome music you don't hear on the radio. If you're lucky, you can't even stream it from the internet. That's the best kind of music there is, the one very few know about. In my personal opinion that kind of music expresses much more than stuff that's availiable to everyone at any given time. You're not suppose to own it, you're supposed to feel it. And if you feel it, it will stay with you longer than any record or playlist will. It becomes one of those things that changes your life and your way of thinking.

Before I get into explaining  metanoia to all of you (which I don't really want to do and most of all, I'm sure you don't want to read about it), let us share a couple of words on some of the records that I loved in 2018. Again, you're always welcome to comment on the post and let me know what else I can delve into, what i have missed or overlooked or something that you think I should like just because you find it fascinating. Let's go!

16.2. Chaos Echoes – Mouvement (blackened jazz, Francija)
I fell in love with the gloomy sound they used on their first record, so this one was maybe a bit too upbeat for me. Don't get me wrong, this is not a happy record, it wasn't meant to be happy. It's just happier than I imagined it would be.

16.2. Harakiri for the Sky – Arson (post metal, Avstrija)
At the moment of it's release, this album was something I needed. My mind is a dark place I rarely leave (I need a good reason to do so and I'm usually unable to find one to help me leave for a couple of moments), so this was quite the soundtrack my mind was looking for. But, to remain honest, I don't listen to it as much as I did at that point. I managed to find even darker, more soothing sounds for my mind.

17.2. Windswept – Visionaire EP (atmospheric BM, Ukrajina)
Yes, I am one of those people. One of those who will love everything this guy is involved in. not for the sake of a so-called 'personal cult', but for the sound he is capable of creating and this sound spans through all of his projects, no matter how different they are.

19.2. Arkhtinn – VI (atmospheric BM, ПРАВА Коллектив)
16.11. Arkhtinn - 最初の災害 (ПРАВА Коллектив)
To continue the 'anti personal cult' rant I started under the previous link, I know nothing about this and the next band on the list you're currently reading. Because it's not even important. This and the next band on the list (and another two which we'll mention in a later post) belong to something  called Prava Kollektiv... and that's basically everything we know about them.

19.2. Mahr – Antelux (atmospheric BM, ПРАВА Коллектив)
There have been suggestions claiming these bands share members, where they are from and so on. But that's actually something that people shouldn't care about. If they are musicians, they talk to you through their music. This album is one hell of an example. I do suggest you listen to this in the dark, preferably through the speakers and not headphones.

23.2. Esoctrilihum – Pandaemothium (Forbidden Formulas to awaken the Blind Sovereignes of Nothingness) (blackened death metal, Francija)
19.10. Esoctrilihum – Inhuma (blackened death metal, Francija)
The debut was a serious kick in the teeth and as soon as the consequences started to wear off, there came the sophmore to finish the work in the majestic way.

9.3. Drudkh – They often see dreams about the Spring (atmospheric BM, Ukrajina)
Read the explanation under the Windswept post. I'm not going to be a name-dropper. Those of you who know apparently understand who and what I'm talking about.

15.3. Grave Upheaval – (Untitled) (angry cave sounds, Avstralija)
'Wait, that's their old record?'
'No, that's the new one!'
'But that one had the same title!'
'...and the title says 'untitled'...'
'Why would they do this?'
'What would the name of the record tell you?'
'What I can expect from it, for instance...'
'No, the element of surprise is a better idea... if the name of the band doesn't tell you everything you need to know...'
Besides an outake of an discussion I had with someone who was willing to listen to me talk about music, someone else stated the genre of this music is called 'Angry Cave Sounds'. Because obvious is apparently too obvious for people to notice.

20.3. Et Moriemur – Epigrammata (atmospheric doom, Češka)
While some poeople are still arguing about whether this is atmospheric doom or death doom or something completely unspecified, it can be said all of the above are correct. And all of the above are wrong. All I can say to it is the fact that I like how the voices fit together with the music. A lot of people nowdays are not so keen on combining the two, so finding a gem like this one is a rare occasion. It also shows I have a huge soft spot for good clean vocals in men.

23.3. Ddent – Toro (post metal, Francija)

23.3. Sunnata – Outlands (ritual grunge, Poljska)
I'm still searching the name of the genre these guys are playing... the names of genres tend to get more and more complicated and less descriptive. or they are actually more descriptive but we (people in general) tend to complicate things much more than they really are.

26.3. Cult of Fire – Kali Fire Puja (live) (gimme, gimme, gimme, Češka)
This is one of those bands that will make an absolute idiot out of me with every single release they put out (and their masterminds side projects I'll talk about in a later post) and I will absolutely love it. While I haven't witnessed them live yet, this is the closest I can get to it right now. Because I don't want to make an idiot out of myself in public (any more than I already have) this is also the only way I should be allowed to witness their performances.

31. 3. Danaknernacht - ...And the Knives cut down the Weak (BM, international)
29.6. Danaknernacht – The Wind of hate Arises (BM, International)
Maybe you have noticed in the introduction to todays post, but if you haven't, I'll have to specifically point out that I'm not really a fan of CDs. I'm a sucker when it comes to vinyl and especially to audio tapes. This was introduced to me by the video found on youtube that contained only one song. If I tell you it took me exactly 19 seconds of listening to it before actually ordering both of them online, you'll understand why I said you need to feel it. This one drills a hole in your brain.

That's the end of part two, but the end is still very far away.

Lisztomania - The Best of 2018, part I.

Even if you're not keen on celebrating new year (because, let's be honest... we've always stayed the same assholes we've always been and no new year resolutions ever cann change that) or you're one of those who claim they are one of the good guys, just to get a present from a suspicious guy in a red suit (if you haven't noticed, some of us hate christmas, because it's not even about some imaginary guys birthday anymore, it's just about who is spending more money they don't have  to buy shit  they don't need to impress similar assholes they don't even like), you  probably noticed the end of the year lists everyone started to post lamost everywhere they can. This is also one of those. Mostly because 2018 was a really good year for awesome  music.

Going through over 1700 albums, EPs, splits and whatnot this year (not all of them were from this year because I'm years behind with my catching up), this list represents a part of the absolutely best of the year 2018. Albums that made my depressed ass happier, my anxious side calmer, the ones that made me think and create and most importantly, the ones that kept me sane.

I won't describe links individually, I'll just let the music speak for itself. And of course, you are always welcome to tell me what I've missed or what I could also listen to.

By the way, this is my first attempt writing a blog post in English, so my Engish could end up being disastrous... or that's just a trick to make you think about what I tried to explain. Your choice.

2.1. Iteru – Ars Moriendi (death doom, Belgium)
Never ever start a New Year with something fast because the rest of the year will never live up to it. Start it with something slow, appropriate to listen to while you are still hungover and trying to prepare for work that is approaching.

3.1. Methgoat – Demo 2018 (how do I describe this awesomeness???, USA)
This demo actually hit me right after I got home from my middle of nowhere vacation and it was the exact thing I needed to get back on track with this co called 'real life'. Getting back to reality always feels like somebody drove over you several times, but at least you can have good soundtrack to it.

12.1. Hamferð – Tamsins Likam (doom metal, Faroe Islands)
I've never been to Faroe Islands so I have no clue how life there looks like (pics on the internet are usually quite deceiving. Music on this album will paint you the picture of the surroundings if you'll just pay good attention to it.

15.1. Gnaw Bone – Scorched Earth (blackened doom, USA)
By this time I figured out the year is not going to be any better than any previous one was and also cured myself of the horrible too-much.people-over holidys-hangover. But, it's always good to have an amazing soundtrack when you're thinking about how much you hate everyone, right?

19.1. Yhdarl – Loss (drone / doom / Black, Belgium)

19.1. Vessel of Inquity – s/t (black / death / noise, Great Britain)

26.1. Hooded Menace – Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed (death doom, Finland)
During the summer I met a guy online and he desperately tried to convince me Hooded Menace were a horrible band. Quite obviously, he's not my friend anymore. His opinion on this band is actually almost as disgusting as his online harrassement.

26.1. Tribulation – Down Below (Blackened glam metal, Sweden)

26.1. Portal – Ion (extremely extreme, Australia)
There's two types of people in the world: Those who love Portal and those who are wrong. Which group do you belong to?

26.1. Orphaned Land – Unsung prophets and Dead Messiahs (oriental metal, Israel)

30.1. Ulvegr – Vargkult (BM, Ukraine)

2.2. Emperor of Larvae – Xerul (black / death / doom, Belgium)
15.12. Emperor of Larvae – Xerul pt. II: Reunion
The first double hit from the same band this year. It should be described in two different posts, but both parts go together perfectly.

10.2. Master's Hammer – Fascinator (If I need to introduce you to Master's Hammer, you probably have no business being here, Czech Republic)

That's it for today, but as I already told you, 2018 was a good year for amazing music, I'll be back soon with part 2 and more.
